₹4 crore DPR prepared to redevelop Sateichoura crematorium into a heritage site.

Memorials of Odisha’s cultural and political icons to be restored and showcased.

Inspired by Puri’s Swargadwar, the site will include a park, gallery, and gas cremation unit.

Cuttack, Aug 25: The iconic Satichaura crematorium is set to undergo a major transformation. Inspired by the architectural model of Puri’s Swargadwar, the Cuttack Municipal Corporation (CMC) has initiated a ₹4 crore redevelopment plan to restore and elevate the crematorium into a heritage and public memorial space.

The crematorium, which houses the final resting places of many of Odisha’s luminaries — including freedom fighters Laxman Pattnaik and Binod Kanungo, Padma Bhushan Kalindi Charan Panigrahi, music maestro Akshaya Mohanty, and cinema legends Gaura Ghosh, Parbati Ghosh, and Mihir Das — has long suffered from neglect. Overgrown vegetation, broken memorials, and a defunct gas cremation unit have marred its dignity.

Mayor Subhash Chandra Singh, along with CMC officials, visited the site and announced plans to revamp the crematorium with landscaped gardens, a memorial gallery showcasing name plaques of notable personalities, and improved public amenities. The goal is to transform the cremation ground into a place of reverence and learning, where citizens can connect with Odisha’s cultural and historical legacy.

The redevelopment will include: restoration of all existing memorials, construction of a functional gas-based cremation unit, creation of a public park and viewing gallery, and installation of informative panels detailing the lives of Odisha’s icons.

The tender process is expected to conclude soon, with work beginning shortly thereafter. “This is not just a crematorium — it’s a cultural landmark. We want future generations to know the stories of those who shaped Odisha,” said Mayor Singh.
