Cuttack Goes Green with Gas-Based Crematoriums

Key Points

Launched jointly by GAIL India and Cuttack Municipal Corporation (CMC), this system has been installed near Netaji Bus Terminal, Khannagar.

Cuttack, Mar 28: Cuttack has witnessed a revolutionary shift in cremation practices with the launch of its first gas-based crematorium system aimed at reducing wood usage and minimizing pollution.

Launched jointly by GAIL India and Cuttack Municipal Corporation (CMC), this system has been installed near Netaji Bus Terminal, Khannagar. Following its inauguration, a successful trial run of the gas-powered cremation stoves has been conducted.

The initiative, undertaken at a cost of ₹4.25 crore, aims to prioritise environmental conservation by reducing deforestation and adopting cleaner practices.

Unlike traditional wood pyres, which contribute to air pollution, gas-based cremation takes approximately 45 minutes per body and ensures a sustainable approach to last rites. Families opting for this system will need to pay ₹2,000 per cremation.

Though the project faced delays due to the late deployment of skilled personnel from the Gas Authority of India Limited, it has now become operational. After successful implementation at the Khannagar crematorium, the system will expand to other key crematoriums in the city, such as the Sati Chaura crematorium.

Authorities expect that this eco-friendly model will lead the way in modernizing cremation practices across India.
