According to officials, the cattle had entered the riverbed on Friday morning. However, unexpected water release from the Hirakud reservoir led to a rapid surge in river levels, cutting off their return path. Locals raised the alarm, prompting immediate action from the fire department.

Some of the calves were carefully placed in boats and ferried across the rising waters, while adult cattle were guided through shallow stretches.
