Bhubaneswar, Apr 3: In a significant step toward bolstering security, Odisha police have announced the acquisition of anti-drone technology to counter unauthorized drone operations.

The move aligns with national security guidelines and aims to safeguard VIP gatherings, sensitive locations, and restricted airspace, as well as some other places like Puri Jagannath Temple.

The newly acquired system includes radar detection, radio frequency analysis, and optical sensors to identify rogue drones. It can track multiple aerial devices simultaneously, determining their exact location, altitude, and flight direction. Additionally, the technology features signal jamming mechanisms to safely neutralize suspicious drones without causing collateral damage.

Odisha’s Director General of Police (DGP) Y B Khurania emphasised the importance of this initiative, stating that the state police will deploy anti-drone guns and other advanced equipment to tackle growing security concerns. The system will be operated by trained personnel round-the-clock, ensuring swift responses to aerial threats.

The move comes amid rising concerns over unauthorised drone activities, particularly near airports, government installations, and strategic facilities.

According to the Drone Rules, 2021, all drone operators must register their devices and obtain a unique identification number (UIN). Odisha police have urged drone users, including event photographers, to seek prior approval before operating drones in public spaces.

With this latest technological advancement, Odisha police are set to enhance surveillance and security, ensuring better protection against potential aerial threats.

Unauthorised Drone Activity

Recently, an unauthorised drone had been spotted flying over the Jagannath Temple in Puri, which is classified as a no-fly zone. The incident, occurring early morning – at around 4 am and lasting for approximately 30 minutes, had sparked concerns regarding the security of this globally revered site of worship.

It was suspected that the drone might have been operated by an individual attempting to capture footage for personal or commercial purposes, such as vlogging. However, officials didn’t rule out the possibility of more nefarious intentions.

Given the spiritual and cultural significance of the Jagannath Temple, the breach has alarmed devotees and officials alike. And, it was not the first time, considering such moves were reported on multiple occasions, in previous years.

The government had emphasised the importance of abiding by no-fly zone restrictions to protect culturally significant sites from threats or intrusions.

So the anti-drone technology will definitely be a game-changer for the authorities in enhancing security measures and ensuring that such incidents are not repeated.
