COVID-19 Resurgence: Hong Kong & Singapore Battle Omicron Subvariants

Key Points
Health expert Dr. E Venkata Rao emphasises surveillance and precautionary measures as COVID-19 spreads rapidly in parts of Asia.
Bhubaneswar, May 17: As COVID-19 resurges in parts of Asia, Hong Kong and Singapore are witnessing a concerning rise in cases. While there are no significant reports of deaths, the virus—particularly Omicron subvariants—is spreading like an epidemic.
Health experts fear that India might also face a similar situation if proper surveillance is not maintained.
Dr. E Venkata Rao, a prominent health expert, has suggested that individuals exhibiting COVID-like symptoms should be kept under strict monitoring in major hospitals. It is crucial to track the number of infections, hospital admissions, and fatalities to assess the gravity of the situation.
Despite the increase in cases globally, India has not yet released updated guidelines regarding booster vaccinations.
However, experts recommend extra caution for elderly individuals and those with comorbidities. Emphasising preventive measures, Dr. Rao urges people to practice social distancing, wear masks, and maintain hygiene.
Currently, the Indian government has not imposed any travel restrictions on those returning from abroad. As the situation unfolds, health authorities and policymakers might consider stricter measures to curb the virus’s spread.
