Cooling Traditions & Spiritual Wellness: Odisha Welcomes Odia New Year On Pana Sankranti

Key Points

This festival signifies the solar transition into Mesha Rashi (Aries) and the beginning of the Odia calendar year.

Bhubaneswar, Apr 14: Pana Sankranti, also known as Maha Vishuba Sankranti, marks the Odia New Year and is celebrated with great fervour across Odisha. It is also celebrated as Hanuman Jayanti in various regions.

According to astrological calculations, this day is also referred to as Mesha Sankranti. During this period, the Sun transitions into the Mesha Rashi (Aries). For one month starting from this day, the Sun resides in the Mesha zodiac sign. The celebration of Pana Sankranti originates from traditions like offering almanacs (Panjis) to Lord Dola Govinda on Dolapurnima.

This festival signifies the solar transition into Mesha Rashi (Aries) and the beginning of the Odia calendar year. It is a time of renewal, gratitude, and devotion.

The highlight of Panaa Sankranti is the preparation and sharing of "Pana," a sweet, cooling drink made from bael (wood apple), jaggery, curd, ripe fruits, and water. This refreshing beverage is offered to deities, neighbours, and even animals, symbolizing goodwill and health during the scorching summer heat.

Earthen pots filled with water are hung with small holes, allowing water to drip slowly over Tulsi plants or Shivalingas, representing offerings to nature and the divine.

Devotees visit temples like Lingaraj Temple and Maa Tarini Temple to offer prayers to Lord Shiva, Hanuman, and Surya. Rituals such as Rudra Abhisheka and charitable acts reflect the festival's values of compassion and spiritual upliftment. Folk songs, dances, and community feasts add to the vibrant celebrations.

Pana Sankranti is not just a festival; it is a celebration of the deep connection between humans, nature, and spirituality. It embodies resilience, gratitude, and the spirit of togetherness, making it a cherished tradition for generations.
