Bhubaneswar, Jan 23: Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi and Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan Thursday paid tribute to freedom fighter Veer Surendra Sai on his birth anniversary.

CM Majhi, in his post on social media platform 'X', said that Veer Surendra Sai was a revolutionary figure owing to his efforts during India's freedom struggle.

"Millions of salutes to the great freedom fighter and revolutionary Veer Surendra Sai on his birth anniversary," wrote CM Majhi. "His leadership and contribution in igniting the flame of freedom in the hearts of the countrymen is unforgettable," he added.

Union Minister Pradhan, on the other hand, said that the freedom fighter's sacrifice will always inspire the society of youth.

"Tributes to the great warrior of the Indian freedom struggle, Odisha's son, Veer Surendra Sai, on his birth anniversary. His heroic fight, armed struggle, sacrifice and sincerity will always inspire the young society," wrote the Union Education Minister in a post on his 'X' handle.

Odisha Deputy CM KV Singh Deo also paid tribute to the freedom fighter saying his fearlessness and dedication to justice will inspire generations.

"Paying heartfelt tributes to the valiant Veer Surendra Sai on his birth anniversary. His fearless fight for freedom and dedication to justice continue to inspire generations," wrote Singh Deo in his social media post.

Born on January 23, 1809, Bira Surendra Sai fought against the British rule in India after they dethroned the rulers of the Sambalpur as he was the legal heir. The Lion of Sambalpur died in Asirgarh Jail, February 28, 1884.

Maharaj Sai, the last Maharajah of Sambalpur belonged to the Chauhan dynasty, chose Veer Surendra Sai as his legal successor. However, British govt refused the claim. And the move didn't go well with the British as Veer Surendra Sai had wished for full independent administration and did not want to be in any way affiliated with the British.

British govt's refusal to have Veer Surendra Sai as the ruler of Sambalpur led to a rebellion.
