Mahanadi Water Dispute / CM Majhi Optimistic after Crucial Mahanadi Water Dispute Meeting during Delhi Visit

Bhubaneswar, Aug 1: Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi described the meeting chaired by Union Jal Shakti Minister CR Patil on July 30 as “highly significant”.  

The meeting was conducted in a cordial atmosphere, with both states engaging in constructive dialogue to find a mutually acceptable solution. Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai also attended the meeting.

Notably, CM Majhi returned late Friday night from a three-day visit to New Delhi. Addressing the media at Lok Seva Bhavan on Saturday, he highlighted the importance of the recent Mahanadi water dispute meeting and sharing updates on flood management in Odisha.

The Chief Minister emphasized that Odisha’s interests — particularly those of farmers, the environment, and the rights of its people — were strongly represented. “A technical committee under the Central Water Commission has been formed to examine the issue and will submit its report to the Mahanadi Tribunal within three months,” noted CM Majhi.

Expressing optimism, the Odisha Chief Minister said this process could pave the way for a long-awaited resolution, adding, “This Diwali will be auspicious for us.”

During his Delhi visit, CM Majhi also met Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, members of NITI Aayog, and Professor KV Raju from the Prime Minister’s Economic Advisory Council.

Discussions focused on Odisha’s developmental priorities, infrastructure needs, and safeguarding the state’s interests in national policy frameworks.

The Chief Minister reiterated his government’s commitment to protecting Odisha’s water resources and ensuring fair access for its people. He expressed confidence that the collaborative approach adopted in Delhi would lead to a breakthrough in the long-standing dispute with Chhattisgarh.
