Bhubaneswar, Oct 21: Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and other senior leaders from the state mourned the demise of renowned comic actor and Bollywood veteran Govardhan Asrani, who passed away at the age of 84.

CM Majhi expressed deep sorrow over Asrani’s demise, calling him a legendary figure in Indian cinema. In a post on X, Majhi praised the actor’s unique humor and remarkable performances, stating that his contributions will remain etched in the history of Indian cinema and in the hearts of millions of admirers. He also invoked Mahaprabhu Shri Jagannath’s blessings for Asrani’s soul.

Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan also took to social media to mourn the loss. In a heartfelt post on X, Pradhan praised Asrani’s exceptional acting, effortless humor, and enduring legacy, noting that his versatile performances brought joy to audiences across generations. He added that Asrani’s iconic roles will remain etched in the hearts of Indians, and offered prayers for peace to his soul and strength to his family and admirers during this time of grief.


Former CM Naveen Patnaik joined in the tributes, highlighting Asrani’s comic brilliance and his enduring legacy in Indian cinema. He noted that the actor’s career spanned over five decades, during which he portrayed numerous unforgettable characters that resonated with millions. He extended condolences to Asrani’s family, friends, and admirers.

Asrani’s passing has left a void in the film industry, with tributes pouring in from across the country.  His legacy as a beloved comic actor and versatile performer will continue to inspire generations of artists and entertain audiences for years to come.

Best known for his role as the jailer in Sholay, Asrani also starred in hits like Chupke Chupke, Bhool Bhulaiyaa, Dhamaal and Bunty Aur Babli 2.
