Elections / Clash Of Titans In Nuapada: High Stakes, Narrow Margins, And Fading Fortunes

Key Points
As Odisha’s political bigwigs converge on Nuapada, the bypoll could redraw battle lines — and end careers — in a contest too close to call.
Nuapada, Oct. 15: In the sun-scorched heartland of western Odisha, Nuapada is no longer just another Assembly seat — it’s ground zero for a dramatic political showdown that may rewrite the destinies of several towering figures. With each party treating the bypoll as a referendum on its leadership, relevance, and strategy, the stakes are climbing faster than the campaign volume.
Drawing a parallel to the historic Battle of Waterloo, where Napoleon's miscalculations led to his final downfall, political observers now warn that Nuapada could prove similarly decisive for key players in Odisha's political theater.
In the 2024 assembly elections, BJD’s Rajendra Dholakia managed to hold the fort with 61,822 votes, ahead of Ghasiram Majhi, an independent and Congress rebel, who stormed in with 50,941 votes. The BJP, despite a statewide push, fell short with 44,814 votes, while the Congress — led then by its state chief Sarat Pattanayak — collapsed to just 15,501 votes.
Today, Ghasiram Majhi, now back with Congress and enjoying the unwavering support of Bhakta Das, is no longer an outsider but a frontrunner. His resurgence is not only threatening the BJD stronghold but also unsettling the BJP, which has thrown its full might into the contest. With Manmohan Samal, Manas Mohanty, and even Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi spearheading the campaign, the BJP views Nuapada as a credibility test for its governance since taking power.

✨For the BJD, the bypoll carries existential overtones. Naveen Patnaik, a political titan who has weathered decades of anti-incumbency, now faces one of the toughest challenges of his career. A loss here would dent the aura of invincibility his party has long projected in Odisha's hinterland, especially after its narrow escape in the general elections.
Meanwhile, the Congress, battered and sidelined in recent years, sees a glimmer of hope through Majhi. Ironically, the party that once sidelined him is now depending on him to lead its revival — a poetic twist in Odisha's volatile political script.
As political commentators suggest, any party finishing third and trailing by over 20,000 votes may find its journey forward dramatically more difficult. In this charged atmosphere, Nuapada isn’t just a poll — it’s a political pressure cooker, threatening to explode with consequences that could echo far beyond district borders.
Nuapada, then, isn’t merely about victory or defeat. It’s about who survives the storm and who gets washed away.
