Plus 2 Results / CHSE Odisha 2026 Results: Why Commerce Students Struggle to Cross the 90% Mark| Exclusive

Key Points
Bhubaneswar: While Odisha’s 2026 Council of Higher Secondary Examination (CHSE) results bring widespread celebration, a stark statistical disparity hides beneath the surface.
Even as crossing the elite 90% threshold for students in all streams has become a hyper-exclusive feat, the gate turns the narrowest for Commerce.
A glance at the data released Wednesday by Odisha Education Minister Nityanand Gond to reveals this big trend.
Big Trend
While 4.46%
of Science students (5,101 out of 1.14 lakh) achieved a 90+ aggregate, only
2.33% of Commerce students (568 out of 24,289) managed the same.
Though
Commerce still outpaced the massive Arts stream’s 0.28%, it, however, seems encountering with unique
headwinds that keep its highest achievers away from touching the peak.
The 90 Score: Science vs Commerce
The root of this deficit lies in a structural evaluation bottleneck.
In Science, subjects like Physics and Chemistry allow for flawless 100/100 scores due to objective, step-marking formulas and definitive derivations.

✨Commerce, however, relies on a hybrid curriculum. While Accountancy offers mathematical precision, core subjects like Business Studies, Commercial Law, and Management require extensive, descriptive, essay-type answers.
In these theory-heavy pages, evaluation remains partially subjective. Because examiners rarely award perfect marks on long-form prose, an artificial ceiling is created, stopping brilliant students just short of an elite aggregate.
High Average, Low Peak Curve
This
creates, what academicians term, a "high-averaging" but "low-peaking" curve. The
numerical nature of Accountancy helps a massive chunk of students pass
safely—fueling a robust 88.07% overall pass rate for the stream.
Yet, entering
the 90+ club requires a flawless execution across every paper, including
languages and business theory. Without the 100-mark objective choices that
Science students leverage to max out their scores, Commerce students under
Council of Higher Secondary Education (CHSE) rules face a steep uphill climb.
Brain Drain
Compounding this curriculum hurdle is a distinct brain-drain to national boards. Students aiming for premium Chartered Accountancy (CA) tracks or elite management trajectories right after school frequently migrate to CBSE or ICSE institutions for their +2 education. This exodus thins out the CHSE Commerce pool, leaving fewer ultra-elite outliers to drive up the top-tier statistical bracket.
The Key Takeaway
Until
evaluation patterns mirror the objectivity of contemporary competitive fields,
Odisha’s CHSE Commerce students will continue to face an uneven playing
field—proving that in the state's academic landscape, balancing the books to
reach a 90% average remains the hardest transaction of all.
