Puri, Apr 2026: The construction of the grand chariots for the world-famous Rath Yatra officially began in Puri on Tuesday, marking a significant milestone in preparations for the annual festival that draws millions of devotees from across India and abroad. The process commenced a day after the ceremonial Rath Katha Anukula was performed on the auspicious occasion of Akshaya Tritiya, a ritual that formally signals the start of chariot building for the deities of the Jagannath Temple - Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, and Devi Subhadra.

Artisans, traditionally known as Maharana and Bhoi servitors, have started crafting the massive wooden chariots using sacred logs sourced from designated forests. Each year, the three chariots—Nandighosa (Lord Jagannath), Taladhwaja (Lord Balabhadra), and Darpadalana (Devi Subhadra)—are constructed anew, following strict traditional guidelines prescribed in temple scriptures. The process involves meticulous carpentry, carving, and painting, all carried out with devotion and precision.

Officials have indicated that this year artisans will benefit from additional time and improved logistical support, enabling them to complete the intricate work with greater accuracy and reduced pressure. Temple authorities and the district administration have also begun coordinating arrangements to ensure the smooth conduct of the festival, including crowd management, security, and infrastructure upgrades.

The Rath Yatra, one of India’s most significant religious festivals, is scheduled to take place in June-July. During the grand procession, the deities are taken out of the Jagannath Temple and placed on their respective chariots, which are then pulled by thousands of devotees to the Gundicha Temple. The event symbolizes Lord Jagannath’s annual journey to his aunt’s temple and is considered a deeply spiritual experience for devotees.

With lakhs of pilgrims expected to attend, preparations are being closely monitored to ensure safety and order. Authorities expressed confidence that with the early commencement of construction and enhanced support, this year’s Rath Yatra will uphold the rich cultural and spiritual heritage of the centuries-old festival.

The beginning of chariot construction after Akshaya Tritiya not only marks the countdown to the Rath Yatra but also reinforces the timeless traditions that make Puri’s festival a unique blend of devotion, craftsmanship, and community spirit.
