Bhubaneswar, Aug 28: In a groundbreaking move to enhance psychiatric care, AIIMS Bhubaneswar on Thursday launched  a state-of-the-art Centre for Neuromodulation Services, a cutting-edge facility dedicated to treating drug-resistant and complex psychiatric disorders through advanced brain stimulation therapies.


The centre was formally inaugurated by Dr. Ashutosh Biswas, Executive Director of AIIMS Bhubaneswar, who hailed the initiative as a “landmark achievement” in the institute’s mission to deliver world-class healthcare to Odisha and beyond.


The facility is equipped with state-of-the-art technologies including Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS), Ultra-brief Pulse Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT), and Transcranial Electrical Stimulation (TES). These non-invasive techniques target specific brain circuits, offering precision-based treatment for mental health, substance use, and neuropsychiatric conditions.

By focusing on localized brain activity, these therapies provide a more acceptable and effective alternative to conventional psychiatric treatments, significantly improving recovery rates and patient outcomes. The centre is expected to serve as both a clinical and research hub, expanding the scope of mental health services in eastern India.


The inauguration ceremony was attended by senior officials and faculty members including Dr. Prashant R. Mohapatra (Dean), Dr. Dillip Kumar Parida (Medical Superintendent), Lt. Col. Abhijit Sarkar (DDA), and Dr. Biswa Ranjan Mishra (Head, Department of Psychiatry), along with faculty members Dr. S. K. Padhy, Dr. Debadatta Mohapatra, Dr. Shree Mishra, Dr. Arpit Parmar, and Dr. Ambika Sundas.


Dr. Mishra emphasized the centre’s transformative potential, stating, “This facility will be a beacon of hope for individuals who have not responded to traditional treatments. It opens new doors for recovery and resilience.”


With the Centre for Neuromodulation Services now operational, AIIMS Bhubaneswar continues to lead the way in integrating innovation with compassionate care, setting a new benchmark in mental health treatment.
