Tragedy / Celebration Over New Gun Ends in Tragedy in Bhubaneswar, One Dead

Bhubaneswar, Nov 5: What was meant to be a celebration over acquiring a firearm ended in tragedy, as a bullet allegedly fired accidentally during a late-night gathering struck a youth identified as Tapu in the chest, leading to his death.

According to police sources, the incident occurred during a feast where several friends had gathered to celebrate the arrival of a gun reportedly brought by one of the accused, identified as Pikun.

During the gathering, the firearm was allegedly being handled and clicked repeatedly when it suddenly discharged. The bullet hit Tapu in the chest, leaving him critically injured.

Investigators said Tapu was still alive after the shooting. The accused and his associates immediately rushed him to Capital Hospital for treatment. However, due to the seriousness of his injuries, he was later shifted to a private hospital.

By the time he was being taken there, his condition had deteriorated and he eventually succumbed to his injuries.

In an apparent attempt to mislead investigators, the accused initially told police that unidentified miscreants had shot Tapu while he was standing by the roadside. However, inconsistencies in their statements raised suspicion during questioning.

As the investigation progressed, police reportedly uncovered the truth behind the incident. During sustained interrogation, the accused allegedly admitted that the shooting took place during the party and was linked to the handling of the firearm.

Police had detained two persons who had accompanied Tapu to the hospital, while the main accused and others allegedly attempted to flee after doctors declared him dead.

Further investigation revealed that the group was holding a celebration centred around the newly acquired gun when the fatal shot was fired.
