Berhampur, Dec 1: In a rare act of generosity, acclaimed Odisha gynaecologist Dr K Laxmi Bai marked the approach of her 100th birthday by donating Rs 3.40 crore -- her lifetime savings -- to AIIMS Bhubaneswar.
Days before stepping into her centenary year, Dr Laxmi Bai, who lives in Berhampur’s Bhaba Nagar, contributed the amount to support the establishment of a Gynaecological Oncology Programme at the institute.
“It is my humble wish that this contribution helps establish a Gynaecological Oncology Programme, shaping future healers and offering hope to countless women,” she said, her voice reflecting the same humility and compassion that defined her decades of service.
Dr Laxmi Bai is widely regarded for her more than five-decade-long career in women’s healthcare, known for her clinical excellence and commitment to accessible, dignified treatment. Her work has left a lasting imprint on generations of women and families across Odisha.
Born on December 5, 1926, she made history early by joining the first MBBS batch of SCB Medical College, Cuttack, in 1945 and completing the degree in 1950. She later earned a DGO and an MD in Obstetrics and Gynaecology from Madras Medical College in 1958.
Her academic brilliance earned her a yearlong stipend to pursue an MPH at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, USA, an experience that broadened her outlook on public health and compassionate care.
Dr Laxmi Bai began her government service in 1950 at the Government Hospital in Sundargarh and retired in 1986 as Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at MKCG Medical College, Berhampur. Over 36 years of government service, she earned a reputation for professional integrity and unwavering commitment to patients.
She has received several honours, including Lady Eminence of South Odisha (2012), the Bharat Jyoti Award, the International Friendship Society Award (2020) and the Best Citizen of India Award (2021).
