Angul, Apr 21: High-voltage drama unfolded in Odisha’s Angul district on Tuesday morning after a minor boy climbed atop a nearly 100-foot-tall tree, demanding to meet his girlfriend and threatening to end his life.
According to a source, the minor remained perched on the top of the tree inside the Utkal Balashram premises for nearly one-and-a-half hours, creating panic among officials and locals. He reportedly tied a cloth and threatened to attempt suicide if his girlfriend was not brought to the spot.
The boy, a resident of Rairakhol area, had earlier eloped with his minor girlfriend a few days ago. Both were later rescued by the Government Railway Police and produced before the Child Welfare Committee (CWC). Following this, the boy was kept at Utkal Balashram in Amalapada, while the girl was housed at a Sakhi One Stop Centre.
On the early morning of Tuesday, the boy climbed the tree within the shelter home premises, triggering a rescue operation. Fire services personnel, police and officials from the Angul Municipality rushed to the scene.
After prolonged counselling and assurance that he would be allowed to meet his girlfriend, the minor finally climbed down safely, the source said.
No injuries were reported, and authorities are continuing further counselling and care for the minor.
