Bribe Trap: Odisha Vigilance Catches Police Officer Red-Handed

Bargarh, Aug 25: In a swift and decisive operation, Odisha Vigilance on Monday apprehended Sri Jagaa Bariha, Sub-Inspector of Police at Bijepur Police Station, Bargarh district, while accepting a bribe of ₹7,000 from a local scrap dealer. The bribe was allegedly demanded to allow the dealer to run his business smoothly and avoid any legal action.
According to Vigilance officials, SI Bariha had initially demanded ₹10,000 from the complainant. When the dealer expressed his inability to pay the full amount, the demand was reduced to ₹7,000. However, the SI allegedly threatened the complainant with “strong action” if the payment wasn’t made. Feeling cornered, the dealer approached Odisha Vigilance, which promptly laid a trap.

✨The operation culminated in Bariha being caught red-handed while accepting the bribe. The entire tainted amount was recovered from his possession and seized. Following the arrest, simultaneous searches were launched at three locations linked to the accused to investigate potential disproportionate assets.
A case has been registered at Sambalpur Vigilance Police
Station under Case No.16 dated 24.08.2025, invoking Section 7 of the Prevention
of Corruption (Amendment) Act, 2018. The investigation is currently underway.
