Malkangiri, Aug 18: A shocking incident in Jandraguda village under Mathili block has left locals stunned, as a mother fought off a tiger to save her four‑year‑old daughter from certain death.
The child was playing inside the house on Monday afternoon when a tiger suddenly entered and pounced on her. Grabbing the girl by the back, it tried to drag her away.
Hearing her daughter’s screams, the mother rushed in. Without hesitation, she picked up a stick lying nearby and struck the tiger on the head. Startled, the predator released the child and fled into the forest.

✨The girl sustained deep injuries on her back, shoulder, and body, with clear bite and claw marks. Villagers said, had she not cried out, the tiger might have dragged her away.
The mother’s bravery ensured her daughter’s survival, though the child was left bloodied. She was immediately rescued and admitted to Mathili Sub‑Divisional Hospital, where treatment is ongoing.
Eyewitnesses described the mother as “Durga incarnate,” fighting death itself to protect her child. Despite the attack, the little girl showed remarkable courage, sitting calmly without tears or fear.
Forest Department officials have begun an investigation to
confirm the species involved. While villagers insist it was a tiger, officials
have not yet verified the claim. The department is examining evidence to
determine which wild animal carried out the attack.
