What Is Heart Attack?
A heart attack occurs when blood flow to part of the heart muscle becomes blocked, usually due to a blood clot or narrowing of a coronary artery. Common warning signs include chest pain or pressure, pain spreading to the arm, shoulder, back, neck or jaw, shortness of breath, cold sweating, nausea and unusual weakness. Symptoms can vary, particularly in women and older adults. Do not ignore the signs or wait for them to disappear. Call emergency medical services immediately and keep the person seated or resting in a comfortable position. Loosen tight clothing and keep them calm. Do not allow them to drive themselves to hospital. If they become unresponsive and are not breathing normally, begin CPR and use an AED if available.
