Bellevue, Nov 7: In a vibrant celebration of heritage and unity, the Shirdi Sai Dham group hosted Greater Seattle’s first-ever Boita Bandana Utsav. Held in Bellevue in the United States of America, the event brought together families and children to ceremonially float handcrafted miniature boats — a symbolic tribute to Odisha’s ancient maritime legacy.

This landmark occasion marked a proud moment for the Odia diaspora in the Pacific Northwest.

Cultural Voyage Begins in Bellevue
The idea for the Utsav was sparked by Guriji Dr. Chandrabhanu Satpathy’s visit to Seattle earlier this year. He encouraged the Odia community to preserve their cultural roots and share them with the wider world. The Bellevue gathering was a heartfelt response, blending tradition with inclusivity and community spirit.

Odisha’s Rich Maritime Heritage
Boita Bandana is a traditional Odia festival celebrated on Kartik Purnima, honouring the maritime glory of ancient Odisha. During the Kalinga era, Sadhabas — Odia sailors and traders — embarked on voyages to Southeast Asia, including Bali, Java, and Sumatra. To commemorate their adventurous spirit, people float miniature boats adorned with lamps, betel leaves, fruits, and coins in water bodies. The ritual symbolizes prosperity, courage, and reverence for Odisha’s seafaring past.

Strengthening Community Bonds
This inaugural celebration in Bellevue not only showcased Odisha’s vibrant traditions but also deepened the cultural connection among Odiyas in the Seattle area, fostering pride and unity across generations.
