Boat Tragedy: NHRC Seeks ATR From Odisha & Chhattisgarh Govts In 6 Weeks

Bhubaneswar, Apr 26: The National Human Rights Commission on Friday served a notice to the State governments of Chhattisgarh and Odisha in connection with the boat tragedy in Mahanadi near Jharsuguda that took eight lives a week back.   

The top human rights watchdog has issued the notice to the Chief Secretaries of Odisha and Chhattisgarh and SPs of Jharsuguda (Odisha) and Raigarh (Chhattisgarh) while acting on a petition in this regard. 

The notice served through online mode asked the concerned officers to ensure the needful action and submit their detailed action taken reports (ATR) to the commission within six weeks.

Notably, a country boat carrying about 40 people capsized in the Mahanadi in the Lakhanpur area on April 19. While eight people went missing, the rest of the boarders were rescued by local fishermen. The deceased included five women and three children. They all belonged to a village in Chhattisgarh.
