Key Points

  • BJP announces three candidates after high-level meeting.
  • BJP poised to win two seats; BJD expected to secure one.
  • Fourth seat hangs in balance, cross-voting fears intensify.
  • Congress support to BJD marred by internal dissent.

Bhubaneswar, Mar 2: The Rajya Sabha elections in Odisha have entered a phase of heightened suspense with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) announcing three candidates after a high-level meeting at Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi’s official residence in Bhubaneswar. BJP legislator Ashok Mahanti on Monday confirmed the decision, marking a bold move that has reshaped the electoral dynamics.

The Odisha Legislative Assembly, with 147 members, will elect four new Rajya Sabha MPs. The BJP currently holds 79 seats and enjoys the support of three Independents, raising its tally to 82. The Biju Janata Dal (BJD) has 48 members following the suspension of two legislators, while the Congress holds 14 seats and CPI(M) one. A candidate requires at least 30 first-preference votes to secure a seat.

Given the numbers, BJP is comfortably positioned to win two seats, requiring 60 votes and leaving it with 22 surplus. The BJD is expected to secure one seat, with 18 surplus votes. The fourth seat, however, remains the real battleground. Neither BJP nor BJD has the outright strength to claim it, making cross-voting and alliances crucial.

The BJP’s decision to collect 16 sets of nomination forms signals its intent to mount a strong challenge. Meanwhile, the BJD, which has already announced two candidates alongside a common nominee, faces growing concerns over possible cross-voting. Reports suggest that 7–8 disgruntled legislators may not strictly follow party directives. BJD MLA Pradeep Dishari has reportedly warned of strict disciplinary action against any defiance.

The Congress, though numerically weaker, has added intrigue by extending support to BJD’s candidate Datteshwar Hota. Yet, internal fissures are evident, with two MLAs- Ramesh Jena and Sofia Firdous- skipping the party meeting, raising questions about unity.

With four seats and five candidates, voting is now inevitable. Legislators have been instructed to remain in Bhubaneswar until the process concludes. The contest, once expected to be routine, has transformed into a high-stakes showdown where discipline, loyalty, and strategy will determine the outcome. Odisha’s Rajya Sabha elections have become a litmus test of political resilience and maneuvering.
