BJD's Women Voters On The Decline!

Key Points

The woman vote bank of the ruling BJD seems to be declining with the rise in violence against women in Odisha every day.
Women are not safe in the State.

Bhubaneswar, Nov 13: The woman vote bank of the ruling BJD seems to be declining with the rise in violence against women in Odisha every day.
Women are not safe in the State.

According to government data, as many as nine women are being sexually assaulted in Odisha every day.

is more ironic is ruling party leaders are directly or indirectly involved in rape and other forms of violence against women and they are being protected by the government.

Justice delivery in such cases is also very dismal in the State.

The list of women being betrayed by ruling party leaders is also very long.

The incidents of violence against women seem to have crossed all limits.

In such a scenario, political analysts see women might boycott the BJD in the coming assembly and parliamentary elections in 2024. Their prediction is also corroborated by the whitepaper data presented by the Minister of Home in the State Assembly.

The whitepaper data shows eight to nine women are being sexually assaulted in Odisha every day.

While 3,135 rape cases were registered at different police stations across the State in the year 2022, investigating agencies filed charge sheets in 2,237 cases only and women in the rest cases haven't been given justice.

Police registered as many as 3,418 dowery-related harassment cases in 2022. This accounts for an average of nine women being subjected to dowry torture.

What comes as a major concern is that an average of one woman is being subjected to harassment other than dowry cases every two hours.  Last year, as many as 3,925 were harrassed.

If dowry and non-dowry torture cases are taken together, Odisha is seeing an average of 20 women being harassed every day. A total of 7,343 women were subjected to domestic violence in the year 2022.

Even though the government has announced a few schemes to keep women-voters in hand during the last five years, an alarming rise in the incidents of rape, abduction and murder say thier anti-BJD mood, say analysts.
