  • Photos with Bijay Mohapatra fuel factional chatter and deepen intrigue.
  • Sujata Pandian’s Rajya Sabha prospects linked to succession politics.

Bhubaneswar, Jan 20: The Biju Janata Dal (BJD), Odisha’s main opposition party under the leadership of former Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, is witnessing fresh turbulence as factional rivalries and succession politics threaten to weaken its organisational cohesion, party sources said on Tuesday.

Senior leader Pranab Prakash Das, popularly known as Bobby Das, has emerged at the centre of the storm amid speculation over possible disciplinary action against him. His strained ties with V.K. Pandian, the party’s influential strategist and close aide of Naveen Patnaik, along with the circulation of photographs with veteran leader Bijay Mohapatra, have intensified talk of factional manoeuvres within the organisation.

The controversy follows the suspension of Patkura MLA Aravind Mohapatra and Champua MLA Sanatan Mahakud over alleged anti-party activities. Aravind, son of Bijay Mohapatra, has since staged shows of strength in Patkura, drawing hundreds of grassroots workers demanding his reinstatement. The mobilisation reflects simmering discontent among cadres, who feel sidelined by the leadership’s centralised decision-making.

Das’ walkout from a Jajpur leaders’ meeting at the residence of BJD legislator Pramila Mallik further heightened tensions, prompting sharp criticism from Pritiranjan Ghadei, fondly known as Danny Ghadei, who indirectly described him as a “paper tiger.”

Meanwhile, the possible nomination of Sujata Pandian, wife of V.K. Pandian, to the Rajya Sabha has become a flashpoint, with Das perceived as obstructing her path. Party insiders suggest that Pandian’s camp is orchestrating moves to neutralise his influence.

Frequent meetings at the Naveen Niwas, coupled with the viral circulation of Bobby Das–Bijay Mohapatra photographs, have deepened the intrigue. Observers note that the developments reflect deeper fissures within the BJD, as succession politics and factional rivalries reshape the party’s internal dynamics.

For a party that once prided itself on discipline and unity, the unfolding drama underscores the challenges of reinventing itself in opposition. As the BJD recalibrates its role against a resurgent BJP, the question remains whether it can overcome factionalism and maintain relevance in Odisha’s evolving political dynamics.
