Urban Development / Bhubaneswar to Get 129‑Km Outer Ring Road as Odisha Unveils Mega Traffic Plan

Bhubaneswar, Sep 6:  The Odisha government has unveiled a mega plan to ease traffic congestion in the capital region with the construction of a 129‑km Outer Ring Road encircling Bhubaneswar.

A crucial meeting chaired by Works Minister Prithviraj Harichandan at Lok Seva Bhawan finalized the alignment of the project, which is expected to transform the city’s traffic management.

The ring road will connect Baghamari to Choudwar, Puri to Pipili, and Khordha to Bhubaneswar, creating a vast network that covers Cuttack, Bhubaneswar, Puri, Pipili, Khordha, and Choudwar municipal areas.

Officials emphasized that the new road will allow vehicles to bypass the city centre, reducing congestion on state and national highways while ensuring smoother connectivity to destinations outside the capital.

Alongside the ring road, two elevated corridors have also received approval. One will run from Kalinga Studio Square to Nuagaon, and another from Raghunathpur to Trisulia.

Tender processes for these projects will begin soon, with foundation stones expected to be laid in the first week of October. Additionally, alignments for roads such as Baranga-Palasuni and Sundarpada-Jatani have been finalized, while soil testing is underway for the Jaydev Vihar-Nandankanan stretch.

Minister Harichandan stated that the government is committed to starting work at the earliest to provide relief from the persistent traffic jams that plague Bhubaneswar.

“The Outer Ring Road will be a game‑changer for the capital’s traffic system,” he said, adding that the elevated roads and new alignments will further strengthen connectivity.

Currently, Bhubaneswar faces severe traffic snarls due to heavy movement of passenger and freight vehicles across arterial roads. The new master plan aims to decongest the city, improve travel time, and support economic growth by facilitating smoother transport of goods and people.

With the ring road and elevated corridors, the government hopes to deliver a modern traffic solution that matches the capital’s rapid urban expansion.

Once completed, the project is expected to significantly reduce travel stress for commuters and enhance the overall infrastructure landscape of Odisha’s capital region.
