Bhubaneswar, Aug 11: Traffic movement on National Highway 16 near Patrapada in Bhubaneswar returned to normal after hours of disruption caused by a protest over a tragic hit-and-run accident.
The incident occurred when a woman, identified as Rebati Raul, who had been critically injured in the fatal road mishap in Patrapada locality, succumbed to her injuries today while undergoing treatment at AIIMS Bhubaneswar.
Rebati’s death sparked outrage among locals and family members, who staged a protest by placing her body on the road and setting tires ablaze. Her 8-year-old daughter Reshma died on the spot in the accident that took place on Saturday.
The emotionally charged demonstration brought traffic to a standstill, with hundreds joining in solidarity. Protesters demanded swift justice and immediate arrest of the accused driver. The situation escalated until Bhubaneswar DCP arrived at the scene and engaged with the grieving family and agitated locals.

After a prolonged dialogue, the DCP assured that the accused would be arrested promptly and that the family would receive all necessary assistance. Following the assurance, the road blockade was lifted, and traffic resumed.
The fatal road accident took place on Saturday when an over-speeding white THAR, allegedly racing with a black Scorpio, rammed into Rebati, her son, and her 8-year-old daughter.
Meanwhile, Khandagiri Police launched an investigation and seized the vehicle, Mahindra THAR, involved in the accident. The incident has reignited concerns over reckless driving and the need for stricter enforcement of road safety laws.
