Bhubaneswar, Jan1: The last week of 2025 witnessed a surge in liquor consumption in Bhubaneswar, Capital city of Odisha, with the city residents spending over Rs32 crore on foreign liquor, country liquor, and beer, according to data released by the Excise Department.

Heavy Consumption in Festive Week
Between December 25 (Christmas) and December 31 (New Year’s Eve), Bhubaneswar residents consumed 2.80 lakh litres of foreign liquor, 1.78 lakh litres of beer, and 1.5 lakh litres of country liquor. The total expenditure during this seven-day period amounted to Rs 32.55 crore.

Consumption Trends
According to the Excise Department, foreign liquor dominated sales during the final week of December, with Bhubaneswar residents spending Rs 28.04 crore on 2.80 lakh litres of imported spirits.
Beer consumption also registered a sharp rise, with sales worth Rs 3.56 crore. The Excise Department reported that 1.78 lakh litres were consumed as part of the year end festivities.
Country liquor accounted for a smaller but significant share, contributing Rs 94.20 lakh in sales. Around 1.5 lakh litres were consumed, reflecting its continued demand among sections of the population.

Zero Night Celebrations
The data reflects the enthusiasm with which Bhubaneswar residents bid farewell to 2025 and welcomed the New Year. On December 31, popularly known as “Zero Night,” the city’s nightlife was marked by high spirits, with liquor sales peaking across outlets.


Excise Department Observations
According to the Excise Department, the week beginning with Christmas and culminating in New Year’s Eve witnessed unprecedented demand. Liquor sales surged across clubs, pubs, off shops, and country liquor counters, underscoring the enthusiasm with which residents bid farewell to 2025 and welcomed the New Year.

Officials said that the consumption pattern during the festive week was significantly higher compared to regular weeks, underscoring the cultural trend of celebrating year-end festivities with alcohol.
