Key Points

After enduring sweltering conditions with a heat index touching 47°C, Bhubaneswar received much-needed relief on Saturday as Nor’wester rain and powerful winds swept across the city. While the sudden storm cooled temperatures significantly, it also uprooted trees and disrupted traffic in several areas.
Bhubaneswar: Residents of Bhubaneswar experienced a dramatic change in weather on Saturday as a powerful Nor’wester storm brought heavy rain and gusty winds, ending days of intense heat and humidity across the city.

The capital city had begun the day under extremely uncomfortable conditions. By 8:30 a.m., the temperature stood at 33°C, while humidity levels reached 77 percent, making the weather feel much hotter than the actual temperature. According to weather observations, the heat index, or “feels like” temperature, surged to nearly 47°C, creating severe discomfort for residents.

Many people reported experiencing burning sensations in their eyes and skin while commuting or carrying out outdoor activities. The combination of high temperature and moisture in the air made conditions particularly challenging, prompting many to remain indoors during peak hours.

However, the storm also left a trail of disruption. Strong wind gusts uprooted trees in multiple localities, affecting traffic movement and causing minor property damage in some areas. Commuters faced temporary delays as fallen branches and debris blocked roads.

Despite the disruptions, residents largely welcomed the rainfall, which eased the harsh weather conditions that had persisted over the past several days. The storm highlighted the volatile nature of pre-monsoon weather in Odisha, where Nor’wester systems frequently bring sudden thunderstorms, rain and strong winds.

Weather officials have advised residents to remain alert, as similar thunderstorm activity may continue in parts of the state over the coming days.
