Power Play Amid Heat Show

Key Points

By May 23, the maximum demand met had increased to 8,182 MW, occurring at 14:49 - the peak hot hour.

Bhubaneswar: Sun god has been unrelenting. The fire rain from sky continues. In a significant revelation, the urban centres with high cooling system footprint emerge as the highest power guzzler in the State.

Data available with SLDC Odisha shows, while the nation experienced a slight moderation in overall demand from its peak on May 21, the operational data from May 16 and May 23, 2026 for Odisha, reveals the intense demand cycles.

In Odisha, the demand for power has been steadily climbing, with daily peak figures clearly reflecting the strain of high-temperature afternoons.

Peak Hour Demand Stuns All

May 16, 2026: On May 16, Odisha recorded a maximum demand met of 7,358 MW, occurring in the afternoon at 14:42.

May 23, 2026: By May 23, the maximum demand met had increased to 8,182 MW, occurring at 14:49.

This shift highlights a significant upward trend in the state’s peak requirement over just one week, as the grid responded to increasing temperatures. The data indicates that during this peak period, the system successfully managed the load without any reported shortage.

For Odisha, the ability to meet a growing peak demand of over 8,000 MW effectively demonstrates the resilience of the current power infrastructure in managing the high-demand periods synonymous with the summer season.

Bhubaneswar, Cuttack Emerge Top Consumer

On May 19, the western Odisha driven by power-intensive mineral, steel, and aluminium industries had commanded the lion's share of the load consuming (2,515.9 MW).

Interestingly the Urban Central Hub (TPCODL) comprising of Bhuabmeswar, Cuttack and Puri had the consumption to the tune of 2,366 MW. The massive numbers are fueled by the blistering summer heat wave pushing domestic cooling systems (ACs and coolers) to their absolute limit in the cities.

Cut to May 24, 2026: The power consumption by urban central hub like Bhubaneswar, Cuttack and Puri has cooled down to 2133.8MW but has overtaken industry heavy western region, which has the demand at 1900MW.

The demand in southern districts has increased to 739.45 MW from 648.96 MW on May 19.

Lens on Nation

The data available with Grid India shows the total power demand in the country has been not only been higher than 2025 but also higher than the April record of 256 GW.

While the peak power demand reached a high of 270.82 GW on May 21, it subsequently moderated to 259.8 GW by May 23. This cooling off in demand, despite persistent summer conditions, highlights the volatility of power consumption during heat wave events.

A region wise glance shows how during peak heat hours many states having high-consumption have frequently crossed the thresholds of 8,500 MW.

The load distribution across other key states on May 23, 2026, illustrates the diverse power requirements across the country:

Maharashtra (WR): As a major industrial and urban hub, Maharashtra recorded the highest maximum demand among the states listed, hitting 30,914 MW with no shortages.

Uttar Pradesh (NR): Uttar Pradesh also handled a significant load, meeting a maximum demand of 29,791 MW, again with no reported shortages.

Gujarat (WR): Gujarat followed closely, meeting 26,622 MW of demand.

Tamil Nadu (SR): The state recorded a peak demand of 18,611 MW.

Rajasthan (NR): Rajasthan managed a maximum demand of 16,467 MW.

Punjab (NR): The state reached a maximum demand of 13,277 MW.

Karnataka (SR): Karnataka recorded a peak of 13,295 MW.

Haryana (NR): Haryana saw a maximum demand of 12,529 MW.

Andhra Pradesh (SR): The state successfully met 12,713 MW of demand.

This data demonstrates that while the nation experienced a slight relief from the peak recorded two days prior, the demand across these major states remained robust.
