Bhubaneswar, Feb 25: The ambitious Capital Region Ring Road project in Odisha is set to move forward, promising to ease traffic congestion between Bhubaneswar and Cuttack.
Virendra Singh, Regional Chief Officer of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), confirmed that tenders for three packages under the Hybrid Annuity Model have been finalized, with three construction firms selected.
“The six-lane road will span 110 kilometres, connecting
Khordha’s Rameshwar-Bilipada and Gobindpur-Cuttack Tangi,” revealed Singh,
while speaking to media persons.

“Each phase of the project will cost around ₹1,500 crore, with work expected to begin by March. Once completed, the Ring Road will significantly reduce traffic pressure on National Highway 16 and improve connectivity across the capital region,” he highlighted.
Recently, the project received clearance from the Union Ministry of Forests, paving the way for construction. In addition, NH-16 will undergo modernization with new safety features, including advanced signboards, road studs, flexible markers, and high-mast lighting. “The upgrade will cost ₹60 crore, aimed at enhancing visibility and road safety,” stated Singh.

Meanwhile, progress has also been made on the much-discussed Patnagarh Bypass Road. In the first phase, land registration for nine owners was completed, and compensation cheques worth ₹53 crore were distributed.
The state government had earlier sanctioned ₹68 crore for land acquisition. Officials and landowners attended the registration event, which has sparked optimism among locals that construction will begin soon.
Earlier, Works Minister Prithviraj Harichandan had announced that Odisha will adopt Chandigarh’s acclaimed road model to ease traffic in Bhubaneswar. “The upcoming Jaydev Vihar-Nandankanan project will feature a main carriageway with parallel service roads, reducing congestion and improving safety,” stated Harichandan after returning from Chandigarh.
Inspired by Chandigarh’s design, the minister said service roads allow local commutes without burdening main traffic. The tender process was set to conclude by February 24-25, with construction expected by late March or early April.
Once completed, the corridor — one of Bhubaneswar’s busiest —
will serve as a benchmark for future projects, modernizing infrastructure and
setting new standards in sustainable traffic management.
