Bhubaneswar, Jan 6: The Babasaheb Bhim Rao Ambedkar Bus Terminal (BSABT) in Baramunda, Bhubaneswar, witnessed a significant development as Odisha Housing and Urban Development Minister Krushna Chandra Mahapatra formally handed over 112 newly constructed shop units to traders.

These shopkeepers had earlier lost their establishments during the construction of the modern bus terminal.

Previously, many traders were forced to operate under unhygienic conditions outside the terminal. With the allocation of new shop spaces, they will now be able to conduct business in a cleaner and more organized environment. The minister emphasized that the move aims to ensure better opportunities for traders and enhance passenger convenience.

The BSABT is also set to host new ventures, including startup businesses and a visa processing office, which are expected to boost commercial activity. Authorities are focusing on increasing passenger footfall at the terminal, thereby creating a favourable environment for trade.

During the shop distribution program, Minister Mahapatra visited the food court inside the BSABT and tasted the subsidized ₹5 meal offered to passengers. He was accompanied by the Vice Chairman of the Bhubaneswar Development Authority (BDA).

In response to recent Ama Bus accidents, the minister also announced strict measures to improve road safety. He stated that driving licenses will be cancelled if drivers are found operating vehicles under the influence of alcohol.

“Before boarding, bus drivers will undergo mandatory checks to ensure they have not consumed intoxicants,” said the Odisha Housing and Urban Development Minister.

Looking ahead, Mahapatra revealed that new electric buses (EV buses) will soon be introduced, equipped with advanced safety features and improved passenger facilities.
