Bhitarkanika Closed For Three Months To Safeguard Crocodile Breeding

Key Points

The Odisha Forest Department announces seasonal closure of Bhitarkanika National Park to protect crocodile breeding sites.

Bhitarkanika, Apr 29: Bhitarkanika National Park, one of India’s most significant mangrove ecosystems, will remain closed to tourists from May 1 to July 31 to protect the breeding season of saltwater crocodiles. The Odisha Forest Department has imposed this restriction to ensure minimal human disturbance during this critical period.

Saltwater crocodiles, known for their aggressive nature during nesting, actively search for safe land areas to lay their eggs. The mothers exhibit high territorial behaviour, guarding their nests fiercely to prevent threats. To further support conservation, the department has banned fishing and motorized boat operations inside the park.

With over 1,826 crocodiles recorded in the latest census, Bhitarkanika remains a crucial breeding hub for the species. However, only one in 500 eggs reaches adulthood, making strict protective measures essential for population sustainability.

Forest officials have deployed extra patrolling units to prevent unauthorised entry and ensure the safety of nesting sites. Researchers believe that this seasonal closure helps maintain Bhitarkanika’s ecological balance, supporting various wildlife species dependent on its mangrove environment.

The park is scheduled to reopen for tourists on August 1, offering visitors an opportunity to witness its rich biodiversity, including crocodiles, exotic birds, and lush greenery.
