  • Sand mafia dominates Baitarani riverbanks in Dhamnagar, Bhadrak district.
  • Villagers allege embankments weakened, revenue loss in crores daily.

Bhadrak, Jan 18: Even as Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Majhi has directed strict action under the “Sand Safety Campaign” to rein in illegal sand mining, the flood prone Baitarani riverbanks in Dhamnagar of Bhadrak district, continue to witness rampant activity by sand mafias, locals said on Sunday.

Local residents alleged that despite repeated complaints, the administration has failed to curb the menace, leaving villagers vulnerable to both environmental hazards and intimidation.

Sand Mafia’s Stronghold

According to reports, the river stretch near Sohada Panchayat’s Sendpur area has virtually turned into a clandestine hub. More than 20 tractors ferry sand daily, often under the nose of officials. Villagers complain that the only embankment road, crucial during floods, has weakened due to constant movement of heavy vehicles.

Voices from the Ground

Pradeep Mahapatra, a resident of Dhamnagar, said, “The mafia operates openly in daylight, threatening locals and ignoring officials.” Lawyer Subrat Nanda added that unchecked mining is eroding the riverbanks and undermining legal safeguards.

Exploiting Loopholes

With auctions withheld citing insufficient sand deposits, mafias have seized the opportunity to build their own routes by cutting embankments. Locals allege that sand is stockpiled in nearby forests, while officials remain under political pressure. Social activist Debasish Rath warned that the government is losing crores in revenue daily due to illegal trade.

Administration’s Response

Bhadrak Collector Dillip Rautaray said that departmental inquiries are underway. “Swift raids will be conducted and strict action taken against those involved,” he said, promising relief to villagers who have long demanded accountability.
