Bhadrak: Baitarani River Crosses Danger Mark At Akhuapada

Key Points

Triggered by incessant rainfall in the river’s upper catchment areas, the swelling waters have already begun to inundate low-lying regions.

Around 27 panchayats across Bhandaripokhari and Dhamnagar blocks are affected, with floodwaters entering hundreds of villages.

Authorities have issued a flood alert, and emergency teams are on standby.

Bhadrak, July 1: The Baitarani River is witnessing a sharp rise in water levels near Akhuapada in Bhadrak district, with the latest readings showing it has surged to 18.10 metres, well above the danger mark of 17.83 metres.

Triggered by incessant rainfall in the river’s upper catchment areas, the swelling waters have already begun to inundate low-lying regions.

Reports indicate that 27 panchayats across Bhandaripokhari and Dhamnagar blocks are affected, with floodwaters entering hundreds of villages.

Authorities have issued a flood alert, and emergency teams are on standby.

In addition, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast a decline in rainfall over the next few days, offering a glimmer of hope for the region.

However, with the river continuing to rise and other rivers like the Salandi and Jalaka also swelling, the situation remains tense. Residents in vulnerable areas are being urged to stay alert and follow official advisories

On the other hand, a looming flood crisis has gripped Sundargarh district in Odisha as relentless rainfall over the past three days has caused the Brahmani River to swell dangerously, inundating low-lying villages and snapping key transport links.

The Koida region is among the worst affected, with nearly two feet of water flowing over the Soyamba bridge, cutting off communication between Soyamba and Relhatu panchayats. Authorities have barred public movement across the bridge due to strong currents, fearing accidents.

Several villages including Lalei, Tanjoda, and Jangaladi are on high alert as floodwaters threaten homes and farmland.

The Siajod bridge near Banei is also submerged, reviving memories of past incidents where vehicles were swept away during similar floods.

Following this, emergency response teams have been deployed, and the administration has urged residents to avoid submerged routes. With more rain forecast in the coming days, the situation remains precarious.
