Key Points

Cuttack Cyber Police arrest journalist for posting AI deepfake video.

Misuse of AI content on social media can lead to jail term.

Cuttack, Oct 15: As artificial intelligence (AI) tools become increasingly accessible, authorities are raising alarms over their misuse on social media platforms. A recent case in Odisha has highlighted the dangers of posting AI-generated videos and images that defame public figures, with legal consequences now becoming a reality.

AI Content Turns Dangerous

Social media users are being warned to exercise caution when posting AI-generated content, especially videos or photos involving politicians, celebrities, or other individuals. In a recent incident, a journalist from a web portal was arrested by the Cuttack Cyber Police for allegedly creating and sharing a deepfake video featuring Prime Minister Narendra Modi and a female political leader. The video went viral, triggering outrage and legal action.

Officials say such misuse of AI not only violates privacy and defames individuals but also poses serious threats to social harmony. Posting manipulated content with malicious intent can now lead to criminal charges, including defamation and cybercrime.

The Rise of AI and Social Media Abuse

With smartphones and internet access in every hand, social media has become a powerful tool for expression. Users frequently share opinions, photos, and videos to showcase their views and status. However, the rise of AI has made it easier to generate realistic but fake content — and not everyone is using it responsibly.

From political satire to celebrity roasts, AI-generated videos are being used to mock, mislead, and malign. While some claim it’s entertainment, law enforcement sees it as a growing threat.
