Berhampur, May 14: Police arrested Shibashankar Das, an Independent candidate from Berhampur Assembly constituency, on the charge of assaulting BJP Lok Sabha candidate Pradeep Kumar Panigrahy. 

Shibashankar Das and Berhampur LS candidate Panigrahi entered in a brawl following heated arguments between them during voting at a booth at Goashani Nuagaon in the city last evening. Severely injured Panigrahy was soon admitted to the MKCG Medical College and Hospital. As his condition remained critical, he was shifted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Bhubaneswar this morning. 

Panigrahy was reportedly hurt in his ribs and lungs following the assault. Ironically, Panigrahy was attacked by Shibashankar Das in the presence of police personnel. 

Shibashankar Das was arrested on charges of the murder attempt. He was produced in court and then sent to judicial custody on the rejection of his bail plea, sources said.
