Berhampur, Aug 9: Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan emphasized the transformative power of science and education in shaping a prosperous future for India during the 5th convocation ceremony of the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER), Berhampur.
Addressing the graduating students alongside Odisha Governor Dr Hari Babu Kambhampati, Pradhan called education and scientific research “critical documents for securing happiness and prosperity.”
Congratulating the postgraduates, he praised IISER Berhampur for emerging as a premier institution of higher learning since its establishment in 2016. He referred to it as a “temple of modern knowledge,” noting Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s inauguration of 15 new buildings on campus last year as a landmark for education-driven nation-building.
Pradhan urged increased investment in scientific research and innovation, highlighting IISER’s contributions in quantum science, sustainable materials, AI in healthcare, and strategic mineral research. He also commended the institute’s legacy of excellence, with students contributing to global research and innovation hubs.

✨The Minister linked the convocation to the five-year milestone of India’s National Education Policy (NEP), calling it a renaissance for 21st-century learners. He reiterated PM Modi’s vision for a Viksit Bharat by 2047, describing it as a mission driven by research, talent, and technology.
Encouraging students to become job creators rather than job seekers, Pradhan also offered a light-hearted suggestion to explore local flavours like “pakhala” and snacks from Girija Restaurant, and visit the Jagannath Temple in Puri.
During the event, he inaugurated key facilities including the Central Advanced Instrumentation Facility (CAIF), research blocks, library, and staff housing. He also participated in a review meeting and planted saplings on campus.
The ceremony was attended by Odisha Higher Education Minister Suryabanshi Suraj, MP Anita Subhadarshini, IISER Director Prof. Ashok Kumar Ganguly, and Chairman Prof. Arvind Natu.
