Berhampur, Dec 15: In a remarkable feat of surgical precision and multidisciplinary collaboration, doctors at SUM Hospital, Sitalapalli here in Odisha successfully removed a massive neck tumour from a 32-year-old male patient, officials said on Monday.

The complex procedure marks another milestone in the hospital’s expanding super-speciality services in south Odisha.

The patient had presented with a large swelling on the right side of his neck, which had been growing steadily for four years. Clinical evaluation and CT imaging revealed a solid mass measuring 9.7 × 6.5 × 13.6 cm in the right posterior neck space, extending retrosternally into the upper mediastinum. The tumour had displaced vital structures, compressing the trachea and lying dangerously close to the carotid vessels, thyroid gland, and subclavian vein.

Given the tumour’s size and proximity to critical anatomical structures, a carefully planned multidisciplinary approach was adopted. Teams from Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery (CTVS), ENT, Oncology, and Anaesthesia collaborated to perform the surgery. Through a transverse neck incision, surgeons executed a meticulous layer-by-layer dissection, preserving the carotid sheath and excising the tumour completely without damage to the trachea or major blood vessels. Post-operative haemostasis was achieved, and the patient is reported to be stable and recovering well.

Congratulating the team, SUM Hospital Director Deba Prasad Dash highlighted that the institution has successfully carried out several rare and complex surgeries for the first time in the Berhampur region. He emphasized that these achievements reflect the hospital’s commitment to delivering advanced tertiary-level healthcare locally.
