Berhampur, Aug 2: In a dramatic early morning operation on Saturday, August 2, notorious criminal Sunil Nahak, alias Mall, was injured in a police encounter near the Pitatali-Chikiti road in Berhampur, Odisha.
The encounter marks a major breakthrough for law enforcement in their crackdown on organized crime in the region.
Sunil Nahak, originally from Kabisuryanagar, had been on the run and was wanted in connection with over 20 criminal cases, including two murders, armed robbery, extortion, and bomb attacks. He was known to operate a widespread criminal network across Ganjam and Berhampur districts.
Acting on a tip-off, a special police team led by Golanthara police station officials attempted to intercept Sunil in the early hours. Upon being cornered, Sunil allegedly opened fire using a Mauser pistol, targeting Inspector Vivekananda Swain and his team. Two bullets struck the police vehicle, prompting a swift counter-response.

During the exchange of fire, Sunil sustained a bullet injury to his left leg. He was immediately apprehended and rushed to MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur, where he is currently undergoing treatment under tight security. His condition is reported to be stable.
Police recovered a motorcycle and the Mauser pistol from the scene. Sunil was also linked to a recent loot case under Nimakhandi police station and had been increasingly active in the Pitatali and Golanthara areas in recent days.
Further investigations are underway to trace Sunil’s associates and uncover the full extent of his operations.
