Key Points

Bhubaneswar Development Authority reclaimed nearly 61.4 acres of government land in Shampur mouza, demolishing 926 houses and 300 under-construction structures over two days.
Bhubaneswar, Apr 18: The Bhubaneswar Development Authority (BDA) on Saturday reclaimed nearly 61.4 acres of government land in Shampur mouza under Bharatpur police station limits following a large-scale eviction drive conducted over two days.

Officials said the operation intensified on the second day, with 12 JCB machines deployed to demolish unauthorised structures. A total of 739 houses were razed on the final day, taking the overall number of demolished houses to 926. Additionally, around 300 under-construction structures were also cleared.

Out of the total 68 acres identified, nearly seven acres could not be reclaimed due to ongoing legal proceedings.

Security Deployed, Drive Conducted Peacefully
Extensive security arrangements were made to ensure smooth execution of the drive. Around 10 platoons of police force, along with 50 personnel, were deployed at the site. Authorities confirmed that the eviction was carried out peacefully without any major law and order issues.

Prior Notices Issued

Officials said multiple notices had been served to residents ahead of the eviction, along with public announcements through loudspeakers urging encroachers to vacate the land voluntarily. The drive was undertaken after following due legal procedures, they added.

Land for Future Development
The reclaimed land is expected to be utilised for future infrastructure and development projects in line with the city’s master plan, as part of efforts to curb illegal encroachments and promote planned urban growth.

Officials Present During Operation

Senior officials present during the drive included Manoj Kumar Swain, Additional Commissioner, BDA; Ranjan Kumar Jena, Joint Commissioner (Enforcement), BDA; Srinivas Behera, Land Officer, BDA; Sudhir Nayak, Allotment Officer, BDA; Biswajit Dalei, OSD (ODA Act); Prakash Chandra Pal; Amiya Kumar Das, Deputy Director (Survey & Enforcement), GA & PG Department; and Srubanshu Sekhar Mohanty, Liaison Officer, BDA.

Earlier FIR Against Land Mafia

Notably, in December 2023, BDA had filed an FIR with the Economic Offences Wing (EOW), alleging illegal encroachment and sale of land parcels by organised land mafias, which led to the present enforcement action.
