Bay of Bengal Braces for Possible Cyclone ‘Senyar’, Check IMD's Forecast For Odisha

Key Points

  • Low-pressure system over the Strait of Malacca expected to intensify into a depression and possibly a cyclonic storm within 24 hours.
  • Another circulation near Sri Lanka may have a higher chance of developing into a cyclonic storm.
Bhubaneswar, Nov 25: A low-pressure area that formed over the Strait of Malacca has now become a well-marked system and is expected to intensify further within the next 24 hours. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the system is likely to move northwestward and turn into a depression over the southeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining South Andaman Sea.

Meteorologists indicate that it may intensify into a cyclonic storm around November 26 or 27. If named, it will be called Cyclone ‘Senyar’, a name suggested by the United Arab Emirates, meaning “lion.”

Despite the rapid intensification forecast, IMD has clarified that there is no expected impact on Odisha from this system. The state is likely to remain under clear and dry weather conditions for the next seven days, with no rainfall predicted.

Origin of the System
A clearly defined low-pressure zone currently lies over the Malacca Strait, and IMD projections suggest that this system will gradually intensify as it moves into warmer ocean waters of the Bay of Bengal. The atmospheric conditions, including sea surface temperatures and wind patterns, are conducive for further development.

Simultaneously, another cyclonic circulation is active over the Comorin region, affecting areas around southwest Bay of Bengal near Sri Lanka. Under its influence, a second low-pressure area is also likely to form today. Meteorologists suggest that the system near Sri Lanka has a higher probability of intensifying into a cyclonic storm, compared to the one over the Strait of Malacca.

How Cyclones Are Named
Cyclones in the North Indian Ocean (including the Bay of Bengal and Arabian Sea) are named by the Regional Specialised Meteorological Centre (RSMC), New Delhi, operated by the IMD. Names are selected from lists submitted by 13 member countries under the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and the UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP).

For now, IMD stresses that conditions over Odisha remain stable, and the state will witness dry and pleasant weather for the next week, even as the Bay of Bengal prepares to host the season’s next potential cyclonic system.
