Bargarh, Oct 13: The world-famous Bargarh Dhanu Yatra, celebrated as the largest open-air theatre festival on the planet, is set to commence on December 24, 2025, and will continue until January 3, 2026, officials said on Monday.
The entire town of Bargarh will transform into a mythological landscape for 11 days, reenacting the tale of Lord Krishna’s visit to Mathura and the downfall of the tyrant King Kansa.
A Living Mythological Stage
During the festival, Bargarh becomes Mathura, while Ambapali village represents Gopapura, bringing scenes from the ancient epic to life. Streets, markets, and public spaces turn into dramatic sets, with residents and visitors participating in immersive experiences.

✨Fresh Faces, Timeless Roles
This year, the Dhanu Yatra Mahotsav Committee has introduced new actors to portray central characters like King Kansa and his ministers, selected through a transparent jury-led process. The move aims to infuse fresh energy into the age-old tradition while preserving its cultural essence.
Cultural Grandeur and Global Recognition
The festival not only displays Odisha’s rich heritage but also draws tourists, scholars, and performers from across the globe. The Odisha government has proposed Dhanu Yatra for UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage status, further elevating its global profile.
District Collector Aditya Goyal, who chairs the organizing committee, emphasized the importance of logistical planning and cultural preservation in this year’s edition. Local authorities are working to ensure smooth execution, crowd management, and hospitality for thousands of attendees.
