Baliapal Battles Back-to-Back Floods: Farmers on the Brink

Key Points

Over 30 villages in Baliapal block submerged due to Subarnarekha River flooding.

Farmers face total crop loss after five failed attempts to salvage paddy harvests. Families struggle with debt and food insecurity as relief efforts fall short.

Balasore, Aug 28: Baliapal block in Odisha’s Balasore district continues to reel under the aftermath of severe flooding caused by the Subarnarekha River. Though water levels have begun to recede, the suffering of residents in over 30 villages across five panchayats remains acute.

Floodwaters still flow two to three feet above key roads, cutting off access and delaying relief efforts. The agricultural damage is catastrophic. Farmers, who rely heavily on paddy and vegetable cultivation for sustenance, have seen their crops destroyed repeatedly — five times in a single season — due to successive waves of flooding.

Many families in the low-lying areas of Baliapal depend on farming not just for income but for daily survival. With their crops wiped out and no financial buffer left, they now face mounting debt and uncertainty. Several farmers had taken loans to replant after each flood, hoping to salvage at least one harvest. But nature had other plans.

Local residents report that while the administration provided temporary assistance during the peak of the flood, long-term support remains elusive. With no crops to sell and no savings to fall back on, families are struggling to put food on the table. The fear of hunger looms large as the community pleads for sustained government intervention.

The situation calls for urgent attention — not just in terms of disaster relief, but also long-term rehabilitation and financial aid for affected farmers. Without it, the cycle of loss and despair may continue to haunt Baliapal’s resilient yet battered farming community.
