Bhubaneswar, Jul 13: Returning from his Delhi visit, Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi addressed the media at Bhubaneswar Airport, expressing deep concern over the tragic self-immolation attempt by a student at Fakir Mohan Autonomous College in Balasore.
The incident, which has sparked statewide outrage, involved a female student who allegedly set herself ablaze after her harassment complaint against a faculty member was ignored.
CM Majhi assured that the government is treating the matter with utmost seriousness. “The Balasore incident has been taken very seriously. Necessary steps have already been initiated. I will personally visit AIIMS to monitor the student’s treatment,” he said.
The Chief Minister confirmed that the Higher Education Department has constituted a high-level inquiry committee to investigate the circumstances leading to the incident. “Once the report is submitted, appropriate action will be taken. The government is committed to ensuring such incidents never recur in any educational institution,” he added.

CM Majhi also highlighted his engagements in Delhi, where he attended the condolence ceremony of Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw’s father. He held discussions with President Droupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, and BJP National General Secretary B.L. Santosh. During these meetings, he presented Odisha’s Vision Documents for 2036 and 2047 and discussed key developmental projects.
“Prime Minister Modi has a special affection for Odisha. We had a fruitful 35-minute discussion on fast-tracking major projects. Odisha will move ahead compared to other states,” Majhi stated.
