Balasore, June 16: A three-year-old girl died, and her mother remained in critical condition after being bitten by a poisonous snake while sleeping at home in Odisha’s Balasore district on Monday.
The incident took place in Dumichak village under Baliapal police limits in the district this morning.
According to sources, Madhumita Patra, originally from Kumharmuli village in Bhograi block, had come to visit her paternal home in Dumichak during the Raja festival. While she and her daughter were resting indoors, a poisonous cobra reportedly slithered into the house and first bit Madhumita on the hand. Startled by the bite, she moved her arm abruptly, causing the snake to fall near the child and bite her on the leg.
Hearing their screams, family members rescued the mother and daughter in critical condition and rushed the duo to the Community Health Centre in Baliapal, where the attending doctor declared the child dead upon arrival.

✨As Madhumita’s condition deteriorated, she was shifted to the District Headquarters Hospital in Balasore for advanced medical care. Her condition was stated to be critical
After getting information, Baliapal Police reached the spot, registered a case of unnatural death, and facilitated the autopsy of the child before handing over the body to the family.
The incident has cast a deep pall of grief over the entire region.
