Talcher, Nov 23: An attempt to rape a 5-year-old girl was reported near a religious place under Talcher Police Station limits in Odisha's Angul district on Sunday.
The family of the girl apprehended the youth when he was allegedly trying to assault her after luring her with the temptation of money. After subjecting him to a severe beating, the family and villagers handed the young man over to Talcher police.
The accused in the attempted assault was identified as Ashok Behera.
According to a source, a man named Dibyajiban Pradhan had brought labourers from various places, including some labourer families from the Kaliahata village of Keonjhar district, to work on the construction of his new house in Angul district. While the parents were working, their minor daughter was swinging on a tree nearby.

It is alleged that the accused, Ashok, lured the girl with the temptation of money from the swing to a pump house behind the temple. The girl screamed when he tried to assault her after removing her clothes.
Hearing the screams, her parents, who were working nearby, ran to the spot, caught the youth and alerted the local people. The family and locals then beat the accused soundly before handing him over to the police.
