Bhubaneswar, May 3: The death of a BTech student at a private engineering college in Bhubaneswar sparked serious allegations, with the family claiming that sustained ragging by seniors and institutional negligence led to the tragedy.
The deceased, identified as Biswas Swain from Jagatsinghpur district, was found hanging in his hostel room, sending shockwaves across the campus.
According to his family, Biswas had earlier informed them about harassment by senior students. His father alleged that he had personally approached the college authorities with these concerns, but no effective action was taken. “Despite being aware of the situation, the authorities failed to intervene. This negligence has cost my son his life,” he claimed.
The student’s mother also recounted her conversations with him. “My son was being constantly harassed by seniors. He told me he was not even able to go to the canteen and was surviving on sattu in his hostel room. I informed my brother in Bhubaneswar to check on him. Later, my son said he could go to the canteen, though he did not like the food,” she said.

She added, “I spoke to Biswas at around 10 pm last night. Around 11 pm, the college authorities called us, saying he had attempted suicide. We rushed to KIMS, but he was already dead.”
The incident has raised serious questions over the college administration’s response, particularly whether timely intervention could have prevented the death.
Responding to the allegations, the HoD of Administration Gopal Sahu said no formal complaint regarding ragging had been received from the student. College authorities stated that all relevant details have been shared with the police.
An investigation is currently underway to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the incident.
