Key Points

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw reviewed preparedness measures ahead of Cyclone Arnab's expected landfall on October 28. War rooms have been activated, nearly 600 km of railway tracks are under surveillance, and emergency resources have been positioned across vulnerable sections to ensure passenger safety.
New Delhi, Oct 27: Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Tuesday reviewed emergency preparedness measures across the South Coast Railway (SCoR) and East Coast Railway (ECoR) zones ahead of the expected landfall of Tropical Cyclone TC02B (Arnab) on October 28, directing officials to ensure passenger safety and operational readiness.

According to the Ministry of Railways, nearly 600 km of railway track in vulnerable sections, particularly under the Vijayawada and Visakhapatnam divisions, is being closely monitored as the cyclonic system approaches the eastern coast.

To deal with any weather-related disruptions, the Railways has activated war rooms at the Railway Board, Zonal and Divisional levels. These control centres are functioning round the clock to monitor the evolving situation and coordinate emergency responses. Senior railway officials have been deployed at strategic locations to oversee preparedness and facilitate swift decision-making on the ground.

As part of restoration planning, wagons loaded with repair materials have been stationed at Krishna Canal, Bitragunta, Mamidipudi, Visakhapatnam, Palasa and Ponduru. These resources are expected to support rapid restoration work in the event of damage to railway infrastructure.

The Railways has also placed diesel locomotives, power units and ambulances on standby at key junctions. Earthmovers, tree-cutting machines and other restoration equipment have been positioned along vulnerable routes to enable quick deployment whenever required.

Officials said wind speeds and water levels are being monitored every hour to assess changing weather conditions and identify possible threats to railway operations and infrastructure.

The Ministry further said that coordination is underway with the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Management Authorities to ensure a synchronized response during any emergency arising from the cyclone.

Railway authorities noted that safety arrangements and restoration resources would remain in place across the SCoR and ECoR networks to address potential disruptions, protect critical infrastructure and facilitate the safe resumption of train services as soon as conditions permit.

The review highlights the Railways' focus on minimizing disruption and ensuring passenger safety as Cyclone Arnab nears landfall along the east coast.
