AIIMS Bhubaneswar Hosts National Training on Hospital Disaster Preparedness

Bhubaneswar, Aug 25: In a landmark initiative to fortify India’s healthcare infrastructure against emergencies, AIIMS Bhubaneswar, in collaboration with the Disaster Management Cell of the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare (MoHFW), successfully conducted a six-day Capacity Building Training on Hospital Preparedness for Health Emergencies.

 

The programme brought together senior healthcare professionals from Odisha, Meghalaya, West Bengal, and Assam, including Consultants, District Medical Officers, Medical Superintendents, and Hospital Administrators. The training aimed to equip participants with the skills and strategies necessary to maintain continuity of care during disasters such as floods, earthquakes, fires, and pandemics.

Speaking at the inauguration, Prof. Dr. Ashutosh Biswas, Director of AIIMS Bhubaneswar, emphasized, “Hospitals are the lifeline during disasters. Strengthening their preparedness and continuity plans ensures that critical care reaches people when it is needed the most.”

The training modules covered a wide spectrum of topics including hospital disaster management principles, emergency incident response systems, triage protocols, logistics, communication strategies, fire safety, psychosocial care, evacuation procedures, and return-to-normalcy planning. A field visit to the Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force (ODRAF) base provided participants with hands-on exposure to real-world emergency response mechanisms.

The programme was facilitated by AIIMS Bhubaneswar faculty trained in national-level capacity-building initiatives. This marks the first time AIIMS Bhubaneswar hosted the training, which is part of a broader national effort to enhance hospital disaster preparedness across India. It was the fourth such training session under the MoHFW’s initiative.

 

The presence of key dignitaries including Dr. Dilip Kumar Parida (Medical Superintendent), Lt Col Abhijit Sarkar (DDA), and Dr. Jayanta Kumar Mitra (Nodal Officer) added gravitas to the event, reinforcing the importance of institutional readiness in healthcare.
