Bhubaneswar, Jun 27: AIIMS Bhubaneswar on Saturday denied allegations of medical negligence following the death of a 36-year-old man, allegedly after consuming poison, saying the patient received treatment in accordance with standard clinical protocols and that doctors made every effort to save his life. The institute also strongly condemned the assault on healthcare workers by the deceased's relatives after his death.
Patient Admitted in Critical Condition
According to AIIMS Bhubaneswar, the man allegedly consumed about 10 grams of poison at his residence in Ugalpada in Odisha's Khordha district on June 24 while under the influence of alcohol.
He was brought to the Emergency Department at 5:25 pm the same day in critical condition. Hospital authorities said the emergency medical team immediately stabilised him, provided necessary emergency treatment and later shifted him to the Medicine Ward, where he continued to receive care as per standard treatment protocols.
Condition Worsened on Saturday
AIIMS said the patient's condition deteriorated suddenly on the morning of June 27.
According to the institute, doctors and nursing staff informed the family about the patient's critical condition and immediately initiated all necessary life-saving resuscitation measures. Despite exhaustive efforts by the treating team, the patient could not be revived and was declared dead.
The body was sent for post-mortem examination in accordance with legal procedures.
Doctors, Nurses Allegedly Assaulted
Following the patient's death, a group of his relatives and associates allegedly turned violent and physically assaulted duty doctors and nursing staff inside the hospital, AIIMS said.
The institute described the incident as an unacceptable attack on healthcare professionals while they were performing their duties.
Police responded to the incident, detained the accused and initiated legal proceedings, according to the hospital.
AIIMS Rejects Negligence Allegations
AIIMS Bhubaneswar said it categorically rejects allegations of negligence in the patient's treatment.
The institute maintained that every possible medical intervention was undertaken in accordance with established clinical protocols by the treating team.
Medical Superintendent Condemns Attack
Medical Superintendent Dr Prabhas Ranjan Tripathy condemned the assault on healthcare workers and said violence against medical professionals cannot be justified under any circumstances.
"Our medical team made every possible effort to save the patient's life while adhering to established clinical protocols. AIIMS Bhubaneswar stands firmly with its healthcare professionals and will extend full cooperation to the investigating authorities to ensure that those responsible for this reprehensible act are brought to justice," Tripathy said.

AIIMS Bhubaneswar appealed to the public to maintain faith in the healthcare system and resolve grievances through lawful and peaceful means while respecting the efforts of healthcare professionals working to save lives.
